EXPLANATION

Hello dear 👧👨
There are many genre of the texts learned in senior high school.  One of them which is interesting is Explanation Text explaining scientifically how technological and natural phenomena come into being, ie. how or why things occur.  Sequential explanations are concerned with the sequence or phases of a process - how a process occurs ( eg. the life cycle of a butterfly).  Causal explanations are concerned with cause of events - why a process occurs (eg. why tidal waves occur).
Now, let's study this topic in detail 😀.

  1.  The definition
Explanation is used to explain why or how something happens or works.
It is used in most subjects, like :
  • History, eg. How did Aceh War happen?
  • Geography, What happens when a volcano erupts?
  • Science, eg. How do Rainbows form?

 Pic. 1. Aceh War

Pic. 2. Volcano eruption

Pic 3. Rainbow

    2.   Social Function
to explain scientifically how  technological and natural phenomena come into being.

    3.   The Generic Structure
  • General Statement, identifies and gives general information about the phenomenon.
  • Explanation Sequence, states a series of steps which explain about the phenomena.
    4.   Grammatical Features,
                      a.   Action Verbs are verbs that express actions.
Eg.  I don't understand why a volcano erupts.
A tsunami can be generated by Earthquakes.

                     b.    Present Passive Voice
The pattern of Present Passive Voice:
                             Subject + to be ( is/are) + past participle/ Verb 3
Subject + modal (may, might, can, etc.) + be + past participle/Verb 3
                             Examples :
                             -   The movie is called Volcano.
                             -   Many new homes are built for them.
                             -   Rainbows are formed when light and water meet in the sky.

                       C.  Technical Terms and Cause - Effect

Text 1.
                                             Why Volcanic eruptions occur

Volcanic eruptions often occur at the boundaries of two colliding plates ➨ General State-                      These plate boundaries are called subduction zones.                               ➨  ment
                                                               Technical term

When the two plates collide, one plate is forced underneath the other.     ⬍ Explanation Sequence
Because the plate moves downwards, it heats up.  This heating creates magma. ⬍                                 As the heat and pressure continue to build up, the magma burst through the crust.  ⬍
      Cause
This results in hot lava and gases being released into the atmosphere along with      ⬍
       rocks and smoke.
       Effect
